Teboho Mokoena marked a major personal milestone during South Africa’s 3–1 friendly victory over Zambia — and he chose to dedicate it to a player who has guided him since his early days in the national team.
The match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha featured goals from Oswin Appollis, Mohau Nkota, and Sphephelo Sithole, with Sipho Mbule delivering two assists and walking away with the Man of the Match honour. Zambia’s Sabobo Banda netted a late consolation.
Mokoena, who reached his 50th appearance for Bafana Bafana before being substituted at halftime, said the achievement was inspired by long-time teammate Percy Tau. According to the Mamelodi Sundowns star, Tau played a foundational role in helping him settle into international football.
“I have to give credit to Percy Tau,” Mokoena told SABC Sport. “He was there when I earned my first cap. He always reminded me that my moment would come. It’s unfortunate he’s not here today, but he deserves his flowers for supporting me through the years.”
The midfielder also thanked Hugo Broos for trusting him and shaping his growth in the national setup. “I’m grateful to coach Broos because I became a regular under him. I appreciate all the support and everyone who sent messages leading up to the game.”
Coach Broos, for his part, praised Mokoena’s consistency and maturity.
“I congratulate him. Not many players get to 50 caps,” Broos said. “Teboho has become one of the key figures in this team, and I’m sure he will add many more caps in the future.”
