Matchday 11 of the DStv Diski Challenge brought major shifts at the top of the PSL Reserve League table, with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns emerging as the biggest winners of the weekend.
Chiefs claim Soweto Derby honours
Kaizer Chiefs picked up a crucial 2-0 victory over Orlando Pirates on Sunday 16 November, cutting the gap between themselves and the league leaders from 11 points to eight.
The win was Chiefs’ second in a row, signalling a much-needed turnaround after a seven-match winless spell. The defending champions have now risen to sixth place with 17 points.
Despite the defeat, Pirates remain top on 25 points, but their advantage has narrowed significantly.
Sundowns close the gap
Mamelodi Sundowns moved within touching distance of the summit after defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-1 on Saturday 15 November. The victory lifted the young Brazilians to 23 points—just two behind Pirates.
Siwelele FC also capitalised on Stellenbosch’s stumble, beating Marumo Gallants 2-1 to move into third place on 19 points, edging Stellies on goal difference.
Weather halts Limpopo derby
In Polokwane, the derby between Polokwane City and Magesi FC was suspended at half-time due to heavy rain. The match was goalless when officials deemed the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium pitch unplayable.
Match Recap: Chiefs 2–0 Pirates
The Soweto Derby nearly faced a late postponement due to bad weather, but once underway, Kaizer Chiefs took full control.
Pirates defender Jabulani Mokone received a booking after 13 minutes in an otherwise quiet opening spell where both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances. Chiefs, however, looked the more purposeful throughout the first half, which ended 0-0.
The rain eased after the break, and Chiefs immediately seized momentum. Kamogelo Malepo broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, calmly finishing to give Amakhosi the lead.
The second goal arrived in the 73rd minute when Naledi Hlongwane diverted Thulani Mabaso’s free-kick past the Pirates goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Pirates pushed late on, but Chiefs’ defence held firm. Talakani Mazhamba was cautioned for time-wasting in the 80th minute as Chiefs closed out a composed and deserved win.
The victory sends Chiefs up to sixth, while Pirates remain first—three points clear of second-placed Sundowns.
When does the next round take place?
Matchday 12 will be played over the weekend of 22–23 November 2025, with Chiefs looking to secure a third straight win. They travel to face Chippa United, who sit 12th and have shown inconsistent form.
Pirates face a difficult test at home against fifth-placed Richards Bay, while Sundowns welcome Polokwane City as they continue their title chase. Stellenbosch will be away to Magesi.
