Leon Double Sends Mamelodi Sundowns Through as Cardoso Outwits Mokwena

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the CAF Champions League knockout stages with a composed 2-0 victory over MC Alger at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon.

On a fitting Valentine’s Day showdown, it was Miguel Cardoso who had the last word against former Masandawana mentor Rhulani Mokwena, as Sundowns finished second in Group C to advance to the quarter-finals for the eighth consecutive season.

Leon Strikes Early and Late

Brayan Leon proved the hero on the day, scoring in the sixth and 63rd minutes to sink the Algerian champions.

The breakthrough came when Arthur Sales dispossessed Larbi Tabti before unleashing a low drive that goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz could only parry into Leon’s path. The Venezuelan striker made no mistake from close range.

Sundowns controlled proceedings thereafter, frustrating MC Alger with measured possession and structured build-up play — a system ironically developed during Mokwena’s tenure at the club.

Teboho Mokoena nearly doubled the lead before half-time, rattling the crossbar with a powerful effort, as tensions simmered both on and off the pitch.

Tactical Discipline Over Theatrics

MC Alger resorted to physicality as they struggled to cope with Sundowns’ rhythm. Referee Lominson Todihajaniaina was frequently called into action amid persistent fouls and scuffles, with tempers flaring again at the halftime whistle.

In the second half, Cardoso’s tactical tweaks paid dividends. A slick attacking move involving Marcelo Allende carved open Alger’s defence, allowing Leon to tap home his second goal and effectively seal qualification.

Cardoso’s animated celebration near the Alger bench sparked further confrontation between the two technical areas, underlining the personal edge to this contest.

Zwane Steers It Home

Club captain Themba Zwane received a standing ovation upon his introduction and calmly helped see out the match as Sundowns ensured safe passage to the last eight.

MC Alger, meanwhile, finished third in the group on seven points — two behind the Brazilians and level on points with Al Hilal, who topped the standings.

Pressure Shifts to Pirates Clash

While the result buys Cardoso breathing room, attention now turns swiftly to a top-of-the-table Betway Premiership showdown against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.

For Sundowns, continental progression keeps their season alive on multiple fronts. For Cardoso, the love story with Masandawana continues — but another high-stakes chapter awaits midweek.
