Marumo Gallants forward Jaisen Clifford says his dream of representing Bafana Bafana is alive and burning stronger than ever — and he believes his international pedigree gives him every right to be considered.
The 29-year-old, who has found the net twice in ten Betway Premiership outings this season, insists his European experience can bring something fresh to Hugo Broos’ national setup.
“I’ve always wanted to play for the national team,” Clifford told FARPost. “The current squad has some of the best players in the country — and I genuinely believe I deserve to be among them. I respect them all, but I know what I can bring.”
From Europe to Gallants — and back into the spotlight
Clifford came through the SuperSport United youth system before venturing abroad, playing in Portugal, Malta, Bulgaria, and Lithuania, where he developed a sharp technical edge and a deep understanding of the European game.
His return to South Africa earlier this year — turning down a move to Orlando Pirates to join Marumo Gallants — was driven by ambition rather than comfort. The forward says his focus now is on consistent performances that could make national selectors take notice.
“To be recognised by your country would mean everything,” he added. “It’s every player’s dream to wear that jersey and make their nation proud. If it happens, it’ll be one of my biggest honours. If not, I’ll still be proud of how far I’ve come.”
With his eyes set on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Clifford’s message is clear: he’s ready to fight for a place — and to prove he belongs among South Africa’s best.
