Just a Point Needed Against Warriors— Can Bafana Get It Done?
Bafana Bafana can still finish level with Egypt on six points if they defeat the Warriors and the Pharaohs are stunned by Angola in the other Group B fixture. However, Egypt’s superior head-to-head record would see them finish above South Africa, as head-to-head takes precedence over goal difference.
Should Bafana lose to their neighbours, they risk being overtaken by both Zimbabwe and Angola. A draw, however, guarantees second place, even if Angola were to beat Egypt.
Goal difference could yet come into play, especially given that three of the four Group B matches so far have been decided by a single goal, with the remaining fixture ending in a draw. That said, goal difference will only be considered if teams remain inseparable on head-to-head results.
Criticism has followed Hugo Broos’ tactical approach against Egypt, with the veteran Belgian accused of being overly cautious against a side many felt was vulnerable. Starting with three defensive midfielders — Teboho Mokoena, Thalente Mbatha and Siphephelo Sithole — drew scrutiny, despite a more attacking shift after Egypt were reduced to ten men.
Now, the equation is simple: a draw is enough. With three points already secured from the opening win over Angola, Bafana Bafana need just one more point to book their place in the AFCON 2025 knockout stages.
But caution carries its own risk. Playing solely to avoid defeat could prove costly, especially against a Zimbabwe side that has repeatedly shown it can rise to the occasion. Previous meetings point to another tight, fiercely contested encounter, with regional pride and AFCON progression set to collide in a dramatic Group B finale.
