FIFA president Gianni Infantino has congratulated Bafana Bafana following their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking South Africa’s first appearance at the global showpiece since 2010 and their first qualification since 2002.
Hugo Broos’ side sealed their spot in emphatic style with a 3–0 victory over Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium, while Nigeria’s win over Benin confirmed South Africa’s position at the top of Group C.
In a celebratory message shared on social media, Infantino praised the team’s achievement and highlighted the unity that football brings to the world:
“Congratulations, Bafana Bafana. You are coming back to the global stage again at the FIFA World Cup — for the fourth time after your last appearance on home soil in 2010. You will play in at least three of the 104 matches in North America next year.
“This is part of the greatest celebration our sport has ever seen, and it will once again show how football unites the world.
“We can’t wait to see you at the tournament. Congratulations, South Africa — see you soon.”
South Africa’s qualification marks a major milestone in the nation’s football revival under Broos, ending a 24-year wait to reach the World Cup through qualification.
