Kaizer Chiefs Set for High-Stakes Group Decider as Zamalek Chase Survival

Zamalek Face Do-or-Die Clash Against Kaizer Chiefs After Costly ZESCO Defeat

A former Zamalek stalwart has warned that the Egyptian giants face a do-or-die scenario when they host Kaizer Chiefs in their final CAF Confederation Cup Group D fixture, following a damaging defeat in Zambia.

Zamalek’s campaign was thrown off course on Sunday after a shock 1–0 loss to ZESCO United, a result that came despite an encouraging run of performances in recent weeks. The setback has intensified pressure on the Cairo side ahead of the decisive final round of group matches.

As it stands, Zamalek sit second in the group, two points behind Chiefs and only one clear of Al Masry. Chiefs tightened their grip on top spot with a vital 2–1 win over Al Masry, setting up a high-stakes showdown at the summit.

With just one group match remaining, Zamalek know that anything less than victory against the South African leaders on Sunday, 15 February, could derail their qualification hopes. A win for Al Masry against ZESCO United would see the White Knights overtaken and eliminated before the knockout stages.

Reacting to the situation, former Zamalek player Hamada Abdel Latif admitted the defeat in Zambia was unexpected, especially given the progress shown under coach Moataz Gamal. While backing his former club to respond, Abdel Latif stressed that there is now no margin for error.

“The situation is complicated, and there is no solution other than to win against Kaizer Chiefs and secure the three points,” he said, as quoted by Al Saudi News. “Zamalek have played strong matches recently, and with the support of the fans and the return of some injured players, they are capable of overcoming this challenge.”

Abdel Latif also pointed to the broader challenges facing the club, including registration issues and the absence of several senior figures, which has forced greater reliance on young and fringe players. He believes this has contributed to inconsistency, even if it has highlighted the effort and potential within the squad.

Despite those hurdles, the former international remains confident Zamalek can rise to the occasion. With qualification on the line and no safety net remaining, he views the clash against Chiefs as a defining moment in the club’s Confederation Cup campaign.
