Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle has ignited a major online storm after accusing a member of DR Congo’s technical crew of using “voodoo” during the tense penalty shootout that eliminated Nigeria from their World Cup play-off, Sports247 reports.
The Franco-Malian coach, visibly furious after Nigeria’s 4–3 defeat on penalties following a 1–1 draw after extra time, publicly alleged that a Congolese official attempted to spiritually influence the outcome of the shootout. Chelle could be seen furiously protesting on the touchline, abandoning his usual composure as emotions spilled over.
Witnesses at the Rabat venue described chaotic scenes after the final whistle. Chelle repeatedly charged toward the DR Congo bench, apparently trying to confront the individual he believed was behind the supposed spiritual interference. He was held back multiple times by his own staff and members of the Congolese delegation.
Clips of the altercation have since gone viral, circulating widely across social media and being reposted by blogs, news sites and fan accounts.
The Daily Mail added its voice to the unfolding drama, reporting:
“Footage published on social media showed Chelle attempting to confront members of the DR Congo coaching staff before the final penalty of the shoot-out. The former Mali international was seen with his arms outstretched and shouting towards the DR Congo staff, before picking up a water bottle.”
A post on X from @MickyJnr__ also amplified the controversy:
“OFF CAMERA DRAMA!! Nigeria’s coach Éric Sékou Chelle was captured trying to fight just before the last penalty kick of the game! He was reportedly picking up a water bottle, seemingly aiming at a member of the DR Congo technical team. The match commissioner will include this in his report, and it could lead to sanctions.”
Meanwhile, according to The Athletic, a representative of DR Congo has strongly dismissed Chelle’s claims, insisting there was no misconduct from their staff during the shootout.
