Amajimbos bow out of U17 World Cup after loss to Japan

The South African U17 side, Amajimbos, saw their World Cup journey come to an end on Saturday following a 3-0 defeat to Japan.

After a tight first half, Japan struck shortly after the break when Hiroto Asada guided in the opener in the 48th minute. Minato Yoshida added a second on the hour mark, putting South Africa under further pressure.

Shota Fujii sealed the result later in the half, ensuring the Japanese advanced to the Round of 16 and ending the Amajimbos’ historic run in Qatar.

Despite the disappointment, this Amajimbos squad leaves the tournament with notable achievements — becoming the first South African U17 team to record a World Cup win and progress to the knockout phase.

Rising star Emile Witbooi finished the campaign with two goals in four matches, a performance expected to draw increased attention from abroad.
