Bafana Bafana coach identifies new playmaker to replace ageing Zwane

From exile to redemption: Mbule earns Broos’ trust again

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has chosen Sipho Mbule as the long-term successor to veteran playmaker Themba Zwane after an unsuccessful attempt to groom Orlando Pirates’ Patrick Maswanganyi for the role.

Zwane, 36, who is recovering from injury, watched from the stands as South Africa beat Rwanda 3–0 to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder hopes to recover in time for the 2025 AFCON in December and the World Cup next year.

Broos had earlier tested Maswanganyi in Zwane’s position but was unconvinced by his performances. The Belgian has now turned to Mbule, who recently revived his career after stints with Sundowns, Sekhukhune United, and now Pirates.

Mbule impressed upon his national team recall in September against Lesotho and Nigeria and maintained his form in the matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

However, Broos warned this is Mbule’s final chance to prove himself after past discipline issues.
“I told him this is your second and last chance,” said Broos. “If you don’t grab it, it’s over. It’s up to you—AFCON and the World Cup are coming, so show me you want to be here.”
