South Africa defeat Uganda to go top of Group K in Kampala

South Africa produced a composed performance to beat Uganda 2-0 in Kampala on Friday, moving to the top of Group K in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Both teams have already booked their spots for next year’s finals in Morocco, but this win reaffirmed Bafana Bafana’s growing form under Hugo Broos.

After a balanced and cautious first half at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium, Broos made a decisive change at the break, introducing Thapelo Morena for Elias Mokwana. The substitution paid off almost immediately when Morena capitalised on a defensive error to open the scoring in the 49th minute.

South Africa maintained control for much of the second half, with Uganda struggling to create clear chances against a disciplined defence. Late in the game, Broos’s substitutes combined again to seal the victory as Iqraam Rayners set up Patrick Maswanganyi, who calmly finished in the 89th minute to make it 2-0.

The result lifts South Africa above Uganda into first place in Group K. Bafana Bafana will conclude their qualifying campaign at home to South Sudan in Cape Town, while Uganda travel to Brazzaville to face Congo.

Final score:
Uganda 0
South Africa 2 (Morena 49’, Maswanganyi 89’)
